Squillace: History, Culture and Beauties of the Municipality of Calabria
Squillace, located in the province of Catanzaro, in Calabria, is an Italian municipality with 3,641 inhabitants. This historic city is the ancient Skyllation (Σκυλλήτιον), a locality of Magna Graecia, which became the seat of the Roman colony of Scolacium. Squillace is also the birthplace of Cassiodorus, who founded the famous Vivarium. During the Early Middle Ages, Squillace was an important Greek-Byzantine center.
The Origins and Legend of Squillace
The origins of Squillace are lost in time, and legend has it that it was Ulysses who founded the city during his return from Troy. After a storm, the king of Ithaca landed between the rivers Corax and Alessi, where Squillace was born. According to other historical sources, it was Menestheus who founded the city. The ancient city became an important military and commercial port, described by Virgil in the Aeneid.
The History of Scolacium and its Transformation
Squillace, under the name of Scolacium, was a Roman colony founded between 123 and 122 BC. The new Roman city was built next to the ancient Greek city and was characterized by its typical Roman structure, with a cardo, a decumanus, the forum, the baths, the amphitheater, the theater, the aqueducts and numerous temples. Although the city lost its role as a port, it became an important road communication hub, connecting the Ionian coast with the Tyrrhenian coast.
The Advent of Christianity and the Evolution of the Diocese
In 71 AD, with the arrival of Christianity, a diocese was established in Scolacium, thanks to the intercession of the bishop of Reggio Calabria. Over time, the Christian diocese became one of the most important in Southern Italy, consolidating itself as a guide for the Calabrian dioceses.
