Badolato (Badulàtu in Calabrian) is a charming medieval village located in the province of Catanzaro, in Calabria, with a population of about 2,917 inhabitants. This charming town is nestled on a hill between two rivers: the Gallipari stream to the north and the Ponzo stream to the south. Behind Badolato extend the Pre-Serre Calabresi, while to the east it overlooks the Ionian Sea.
History of Badolato
The origins of Badolato date back to 1080, when Robert Guiscard built a fortified castle. The name of the village derives from “Vadolato”. In 1269, the Angevins granted the fief to Philip, starting a series of historical events that marked the history of the town. Over the centuries, Badolato passed into the hands of numerous noble families, including the Toraldo, the Ravaschieri, the Pinelli and the Pignatelli di Belmonte. The village was severely damaged by the earthquakes of 1640, 1659 and 1783, and also hit by a flood in 1951. In 1997, Badolato began a policy of welcoming immigration, with the first landing of hundreds of Kurds on its shores, an event that marked an important chapter in its recent history.
