Altomonte, a historic Calabrian town located at about 455 m above sea level, is located on a promontory that offers spectacular panoramic views. Its fertile territory is crossed by the rivers Esaro, Grondi and Fiumicello, and is characterized by large flat and hilly areas. It borders Lungro, Firmo, Castrovillari, San Lorenzo del Vallo, Roggiano, Mottafollone, San Sosti, San Donato di Ninea and Acquaformosa. The total surface area of ​​the municipality of Altomonte is about 65.29 km², and is rich in crops of wheat, barley, legumes, citrus fruits and orchards, as well as olive groves and native vineyards that produce fine Balbini wines, known since the time of Pliny the Elder. The town, known in the past as Brahall, Bragalla and Antifluvius, took the name of Altomonte in 1343, at the behest of Queen Giovanna II of Naples. Throughout its history, it was a fiefdom first of the powerful Sangineto family and subsequently of the Sanseverino family.
