TheLamezia Terme “Sant’Eufemia” Airport is located in the homonymous district of the municipality of Lamezia Terme, it is the main airport in Calabria and one of the first in the South for passenger traffic. The Lamezia airport operates scheduled connections for both national and international flights and charter connections organized by tour operators for intercontinental flights. Thanks to its central geographical position in the region, and therefore easily accessible, it serves the whole of Calabria and also some municipalities in the neighboring regions.
In 1965 the Consaer consortium was established with the aim of building a new airport that could be connected to the A2 motorway, the Southern Tyrrhenian railway and the port of Gioia Tauro, for this reason a large flat area in Lamezia Terme was chosen.
The airport was inaugurated in June 1976 and in the following December the airline Itavia began to operate scheduled flights to Rome-Ciampino, Milan-Linate, Catania and Palermo. The design of the passenger terminal is due to the group of designers made up of the architect Piero Moroli (group leader), with eng. A. Maffey, G. and G. Pennestri, winner of the competition announced in 1971.
In 1982 the airport was expanded and modernized and in 1990 its management passed to a mixed public-private company called SACAL.
