Briatico: History, Tradition and Transport Services from Lamezia Terme

Briatico, a charming village in Calabria located on the Tyrrhenian coast, has origins that date back to the times of the Locrians, a people of Magna Graecia. Its foundation is linked to the period of their passage to Hipponion. The first certain historical evidence of the city of Briatico dates back to the 12th century, when Roger the Norman mentioned the small center of Euriatikon (now Briatico) in a papal bull regarding the diocese of Mileto. In various documents compiled between 1130 and 1271, the toponym Euriatikon appears next to the name Briatico.

History and Dominations of Briatico

During the feudal period, Briatico passed under various dominions. In 1269, Niccolò de Trayna received the fief from King Charles I of Anjou, which he held until his death in 1278. Subsequently, Briatico passed under the control of Adamo d’Elmis (until 1304), Gilberto de Santillis, and Leone da Reggio, who was the Grand Seneschal of the Kingdom of Naples. Ownership of the fiefdoms then passed to the Ruffo family of Catanzaro, who held the dominion until 1404. After several struggles and rebellions, the fiefdom was sold in 1404 to Rinaldo d’Aquino, Baron of Castiglione. Over the years, the village passed into the hands of several noble families, including the d’Aquinos, the Ruffo di Montalto, and the Marino Marzanos. In 1494, Briatico became a free city, governed by a mayor. However, in 1496, the fiefdom was ceded to the Spanish de Castro Bisbal, who obtained the title of counts. After the end of the Bisbal dynasty, Briatico passed to the Pignatelli di Monteleone, who governed the city until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.
