Lamezia Terme Central Station

The stazione di Lamezia Terme Centrale is one of the main stations of the Southern Tyrrhenian Railway. It is also the starting point of the line to Catanzaro. It is located 26 meters above sea level in the Sant’Eufemia district and serves the town of Lamezia Terme.

Passenger traffic is approximately 1 million per year.

History

The opening of the station is linked to the completion of the section between Sant'Eufemia Marina-Gizzeria and Pizzo, entrusted to the Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo, which took place on 15 November 1894. On the same day, the first section of approximately 25 km between Sant'Eufemia Bifurcazione (the original name of the current Lamezia Terme Centrale station) and Marcellinara of the branch line to Catanzaro Lido was also opened to traffic. The following year, on 31 July 1895, the opening to traffic of the long section, finally completed, between Praja-Ajeta-Tortora, passing through Scalea, Cetraro, Paola, Amantea up to Sant'Eufemia Marina connected the station to the rest of the Southern Tyrrhenian Railway. Catanzaro became accessible from the Tyrrhenian coast by rail on 8 June 1899, thus also creating a connection between the station and the towns on the Ionian railway.

Between 1928 and 1935 a reclamation program of the Sant'Eufemia plain was started with the construction of numerous farmhouses and a new and larger station in Marina di Gizzeria (today Sant'Eufemia Lamezia, not to be confused with Sant'Eufemia Marina which is today's Gizzeria Lido and which at the time was more important also due to its proximity to the port), this in 1935 took the new name of Sant'Eufemia Lamezia station, in place of the previous one of Sant'Eufemia Bifurcazione. In the same years the entire Tirrenica Meridionale railway was electrified and a locomotive shed was built on the north side of the station. In the sixties the station was expanded following the construction of the double track between Scalea and San Pietro a Maida and the modernization of all the infrastructures. Finally, in 1969, after the establishment of the new municipality of Lamezia Terme which brought together the previous municipalities of Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia, the station changed its name again to its current one. The suffix Centrale was added to distinguish it from the stations of Lamezia Terme Nicastro and Lamezia Terme Sambiase.
